Description

Québec Literature and Society is an advanced French course.  The language of instruction in this class is French.

In this course we will survey the evolution of Québec oral literature, novel, poetry, theater, and song through the meaningful work of writers from the beginning of Nouvelle-France until now.  We will see how they did not only reflect the values and concerns of their times, but also participated actively in the profound transformations that lead to today’s Québec:   A unique vibrant and lively French speaking society of over 7 million inhabitants in North America .  Emphasis will be put on the social aspects of Québec Literature.  Students will learn about the socio-politic evolution of Québec society through the study of literary currents.

Course Requirements

Class Attendance Policy, Participation and Daily Work:
Attendance is mandatory. Daily attendance will be taken. Three (3) unexcused absences are allowed. For each absence beyond that, 1% will be deducted from your participation grade for each day missed. Students who present their instructor with an excused absence card for a university-related activity or with a written excuse from a physician are excused from class but not from submitting assignments on time. Other absences that may be considered “excused” will be determined at the professor’s discretion. Also, habitual late arrival and/or early departure are impolite and disruptive and may affect your participation grade at the professor’s discretion.

Readings and class discussion are an important part of this class.  It is crucial that student make the required readings in a timely manner in order to be able to participate in class discussion.  Evaluation will be based on observation of willingness to participate fully, frequently, and constructively in class, as well as on preparation before class.  Class discussion will be in French.

Mid-term and Final Take-home exams:
Students will receive two take-home exams.  Each take-home exam will include 3 questions from which the student will choose one and answer it by writing an original paper in French.  Each paper must be 7 to 8 pages long (double line spacing) NO LESS and NO MORE!  Shorter or longer texts will not be taken into account!  The questions will refer to the material studied in class, including the movies, as well as the readings.

NOTE: Take-home exams are due at 4pm of the day for which they were assigned and MUST BE SENT BY E-MAIL at lise.bouchard@sdstate.edu

If you miss a class for any reason, it is your responsibility to contact another student or the professor to find out the reading assignments for the next class period.

Cheating and Plagiarism Policy:
The policies on cheating and plagiarism contained in Chapter 1 of the student handbook (01:10:23:01 – 01:10:23:04) are adhered to strictly in this class. Presenting another student’s work as one’s own or cheating on quizzes or tests may result in one of the following punishments: (1) failure on the individual assignment, (2) failure in the course, (3) dismissal from the university.

Special Needs/Accommodations ( ADA Statement): Students with special needs are entitled to “reasonable accommodation” under the Americans with Disabilities Act.  If you require special accommodations of any kind in order to participate in this class should immediately contact me (in full confidence of privacy) and then make an appointment as soon as possible with the Office of Disability Services, 110 West Hall (Tel: 688-4504).

TENTATIVE PLAN FOR THE SEMESTER
